National Glaucoma Awareness Month: A Call to Action for Senior Eye Health

January marks National Glaucoma Awareness Month, a crucial time for raising
awareness about one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. At
Arkos Health, we understand the importance of protecting our vision, particularly as we
age. Seniors are especially vulnerable to glaucoma, making regular eye checks an
essential part of maintaining sight and quality of life.

What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve,
vital for good vision. Often referred to as the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma progresses
slowly, with many people unaware of any symptoms until significant vision loss has
occurred. This is where awareness and regular check-ups become critical.

As we age, the risk factors for developing glaucoma increase. These include a family
history of the condition, certain medical issues like diabetes, and elevated internal eye
pressure. Moreover, the likelihood of developing eye conditions generally rises with age,
making regular glaucoma screenings along with eye exams exceedingly important for
seniors. Early detection is key to preserving vision since the damage from glaucoma
cannot be reversed – but can be managed effectively with treatment. Eye exams can
detect glaucoma in its early stages, helping avoid severe vision impairment or
blindness.

While glaucoma often doesn’t present early symptoms, there are signs to be aware of
including:

  • Gradual loss of peripheral vision, often in both eyes
  • Tunnel vision in advanced stages
  • Severe headache and eye pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Halos around lights
  • Redness in the eye

At Arkos Health, we recommend including regular eye check-ups as part of a comprehensive wellness plan. Encourage loved ones to stay informed about their eye health, pay attention to any changes in vision, and establish a routine with an eye care professional. National Glaucoma Awareness Month presents the perfect opportunity to educate ourselves and others about this condition, prioritize our eye health, and encourage every senior in our lives to do the same. At Arkos Health, we’re committed to supporting our community in maintaining healthy vision for years to come. Remember, early detection can be the difference between sight and vision loss. Don’t wait – schedule an eye check-up today! For more information, visit Arkos Health.
